Kerala polls: Debate over CM probable puts Congress in the dock
K C Venugopal, V D Satheesan and Ramesh Chennithala pushed to secure maximum representation for their nominees in candidate list
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Congress-led UDF is witnessing early signs of internal jockeying for leadership, as senior leaders publicly stake their positions in the race for chief minister even before the assembly election outcome.Congress state leadership finds itself in a tight spot after senior leaders triggered an open debate on the issue. The development has raised concerns within KPCC that such discussions, surfacing in the middle of campaigning, could divert attention from core electoral strategies and risk deepening factional divisions within the party.Veterans like K Sudhakaran and P J Kurien openly endorsing Ramesh Chennithala have brought underlying factional dynamics within the party to the forefront. Sudhakaran's remarks —projecting Chennithala as his preferred chief ministerial candidate— are being viewed as a calculated political signal at a time when multiple power centres are active within state Congress.Kurien's statement at a public convention, confidently declaring Chennithala as the next chief minister if UDF wins, has further sharpened the narrative. The timing and tone of these endorsements suggest an attempt by a section of leadership to consolidate support behind a senior face, even before electoral results are declared.
However, opposition leader V D Satheesan's response indicates resistance to any premature projection. By dismissing the discussion as individual opinions and reiterating party high command-driven decision-making process, Satheesan signalled that the leadership question remains open, and contested.Neither rejecting the endorsements nor fully embracing the speculation, Chennithala himself sought to strike a cautious balance. His insistence that the party would take a final call post-election reflects both political prudence and an awareness of the delicate intra-party equations. It is also significant that senior leaders, including Chennithala, Satheesan and K C Venugopal, pushed to secure maximum representation for their nominees in the candidate list — seen as a strategic move to strengthen their positions in the post-election leadership race.At a broader level, the developments underline Congress's recurring challenge in Kerala— managing leadership ambitions while maintaining a united electoral front. The early emergence of the chief ministerial debate, even before votes are cast, risks providing political ammunition to rivals, particularly the ruling LDF.Chennithala's parallel attack on chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan also fits into this larger strategy — attempting to shift the narrative outward even as internal equations evolve. Yet, with discontent over candidate selection having surfaced earlier, the UDF leadership faces the dual task of containing factional undercurrents while projecting cohesion ahead of a high-stakes electoral battle.
